How can we ensure energy supply in the future, while planning for future climate change and limiting emissions from energy? CICERO conducts research on how emissions from the energy sector contribute to climate change, how these emissions can be reduced, and how climatic changes affect the demand and supply of energy.
Fossil fuels are the main source of greenhouse gases, representing 80 per cent of man-made CO2 emissions across the globe. Emissions come from both energy production, transport and processing, and energy use in industry, transport and heating.
Climate change and energy production
CICERO studies how emissions from the energy sector affect our climate both on short and long term. Our researchers have, for example, provided knowledge to the IPCC about the net climate effect of various emissions from the energy sector.
CICERO also identifies how gradual changes in rain, wind and temperature can affect the demand and use of energy. Extreme weather events can lead to power shutdowns. For example, heat waves may force a shutdown of nuclear power centrals, while extreme storms can destroy power lines.
We assess Norway’s role in the global and European energy market. We identify which measures are most effective in reducing emissions from the energy sector, both in Norway and globally. We study behavioural change and the feasibility and public acceptance of energy measures.
This research covers, for example, issues such as the EU’s emissions trading system, renewable energy policies, Norway’s role as a green battery for Europe and Norway’s energy lobbying in Brussels. We also analyse investments in the power sector under political uncertainty. Finally, our research also addresses energy efficency and the use of energy in the transport sector.
Our projects involve a broad range of private and public energy actors from Scandinavia.
